Chapter Seven

Lane attended a meeting with Maeve and Severn at Lanzo Lines Headquarters. They insisted on implementing the new surveillance schedule immediately. Lane took the first shift as he rode the train to Denver. He kept close tabs on the baggage cars, but nothing seemed amiss. Even the trip back to Ellstree was uneventful.

The following day, Lane returned to the office and reported to the Lanzos. They discussed alternative surveillance methods without disrupting the passengers or the security guard system.

Maeve rested her hand on the table. “I wish we could catch the thieves.”

Severn placed his hand on hers. “We will, my dear. It’s only a matter of time.”

“I’m concerned they are destroying all the hard work the Lanzo family has put into the business. We work so hard to maintain a reputable rail line.”

He squeezed her hand. “The community knows that.”

Lane nodded. “We’ll catch them.”

“I know we will.” Maeve smiled. “I am having a hard time waiting, wondering what their next move will be.”

Severn turned to Lane. “We’re looking for a temporary cook. The lady we hire is welcome to stay at our home. We have an extra room. Please let us know if you hear of anyone looking for work.”

“What about Miss Orti? She was a cook in a big house in Denver before she moved to Ellstree.” Lane stretched. “She’s staying at Herbert Boarding House. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind having a part-time job with housing included.”

“Please let her know. The sooner we have a cook at the house, the sooner we can spend more time looking for the bandits,” Severn said. “It would relieve the pressure my wife is feeling right now.”

Lane rose. “I’ll find her and relay your message.”

Perfect. He could spend some time with the lovely Fia. His day just added a fun twist to it. He left the office and walked to the Herbert Boarding House. Mrs. Herbert told him that Fia was running errands. Where would a lovely woman go to run errands? The Mercantile? The bakery?

Lane walked to Main Street and searched the stores. Fia was nowhere to be found. Maybe she was running circles around him. He found a bench outside the Mercantile and waited. It was a nice enough day to sit in the sun and chat with the locals as they did their own errands around town.

An hour later, he’d enjoyed several conversations but still hadn’t found Fia. Where could the woman have gotten to? Did she have a date with Gael? He rose and stretched. He wouldn’t mind getting a bite to eat. He walked past the restaurants and peered inside. She was nowhere in sight.

On a whim, he decided to check the Ellstree Library at the end of Main Street. Built of light-colored bricks, the library housed a lot of books. The bell on the door clanged as he entered. The librarian nodded as he walked past the front counter.

Lane walked up and down the aisles. Tucked in the back corner under an arched window was the missing lady.
